Just a note to show how rot can get into your exposed timbers. Nails used to secure the battens to the bottom rail have allowed moisture to penetrate into the timber and if left unchecked this is what happens. Inspect and seal timbers (paint etc) paying particular attention to nail penetrations, cracks and splits in the timber. Do this with all your exposed timbers and they will last a life time.
